How to style a console table.
A console can connect a wall, a passage and the objects used every day. Build the arrangement in layers, beginning with the space around the table.
1. Choose the position before the accessories
Start with circulation. A console is often shallow, but it still changes the width of an entry, hallway or route behind a sofa. Mark the proposed footprint on the floor, then walk past it while carrying the objects you normally move through that space. Check nearby doors and drawers at their full opening.
The table should feel related to the wall length. On a broad wall, a very narrow console can look stranded unless a larger piece of art or a deliberate group extends the composition. In a compact entry, a little clear wall on each side can make the arrangement feel calm.
2. Set one visual anchor
Choose a lead element above the console: dimensional wall art, a mirror or a framed work. Centre it on the table rather than automatically centring it on the wall. If the design is intentionally asymmetric, balance visual weight instead of matching every edge.
Use one taller anchor, one middle-height object and one lower horizontal note. The difference in height creates rhythm while keeping the surface from reading as a row of unrelated items.
3. Edit the useful surface
Decide what the console needs to do. An entry may require a small landing area for daily objects; a living-room console may hold a lamp or a single sculptural accent. Protect that useful area instead of filling every centimetre. Empty surface is not unfinished—it is what allows the chosen objects to be noticed.
Repeat one quality from the table elsewhere in the arrangement. A warm metal base might be echoed by one small metallic detail; an engineered-wood top might sit comfortably with a paper, ceramic or woven texture. Avoid repeating every finish at once.
4. Treat a lower tier as architecture
On a two-tier console, the lower shelf completes the table’s silhouette. A low, broad group usually preserves the open space between levels better than several tall objects. Before placing anything there, view the console from the main approach and check whether the frame and shelf remain visible.

5. Step back and remove one thing
View the arrangement from the doorway, from a seated position and in evening light. If every object asks for attention, remove the least useful one and check again. A console works best when wall art, surface objects and the base read as one composition rather than three separate displays.
